One Fails to understand Michael Frendo’s logic

Malta Independent Sunday, 23 December 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

From Ms J. Grima

In his reply published in your newspaper following his defeat at the election for secretary-general of the Commonwealth, Dr Frendo claimed that, “the fact that Malta straddles both the EU reality and the reality of a small island State was attractive to many countries”.

Yet, the website of the Maltese Foreign Affairs Ministry opens with a message from the self-same Dr Frendo who states: “Malta’s perspective in foreign policy stems from our own realities. We are a country which wholly forms part of Europe and wholly forms part of the Mediterranean.”

How can our own realities – namely EU membership and being part of the Mediterranean – tally with the expectations of African, Caribbean, and Asian countries?

To my mind, this is cuckoo-land thinking.
