The Malta Transport Authority (ADT) yesterday launched the public transport fares in the euro currency – some of which have actually been rounded down to encourage people to use public transport.

At a news conference held in front of City Gate Valletta, Roads and Infrastructure Minister Jesmond Mugliett said the new fares were in line with the government’s policy to ensure that there was no price increase as a result of the introduction of the euro.

The minister said the ADT had consulted directly with the National Euro Changeover Committee to ensure that the currency switch was smooth and correct.

“The ADT gave particular attention to ensure that there was no price increase and that the fares are rounded down – in fact certain fares were actually decreased to further encourage people to use public transport,” said Mr Mugliett.

The ADT, he added, had organised training sessions about the changeover for public transport drivers.

NECC chairman Joseph F.X. Zahra encouraged people to tender the exact fare when using public transport and said that ADT should act as an example for the private sector.
