Malta Independent Saturday, 5 January 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Opposition Leader Alfred Sant was yesterday discharged from Mater Dei Hospital at 4pm, leaving for home where he will continue his convalescence period.

In a statement, the MLP said that Dr Sant left hospital earlier than was originally thought after his major operation on 27 December.

Before leaving hospital, Dr Sant personally thanked Prof. Anthony Zammit and the rest of the medical team that performed the surgery. He also had words of thanks for other levels of hospital staff who helped him recuperate as well as the hospital’s administration team for their dedication and attention to detail.

In the statement, signed by Secretary General Jason Micallef, Dr Sant expressed his heartfelt gratitude towards all those who showed him and his family support and solidarity. He also thanked Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi for paying him a visit earlier in the day.

The MLP requested people’s cooperation to allow Dr Sant to rest in his own home and to allow him to recuperate quietly.
