Qormi failed to re-gain the top spot in the table when they were surprisingly beaten by Mellieha in a seven-goal thriller.
For Mellieha this was the first win of the season, and for the first time this season they moved from the bottom of the table, leaving St Patrick as wooden spoonists. The match was spectacular to say the least with goal mouth drama in quick succession.
Qormi surged forward from the start but Mellieha took the lead in the 12th minute in their first real attack. Gianluca Calabretta who had a five-star performance managed to beat Farrugia from an acute angle. Two minutes later Qormi were back on level terms when Carmel Formosa headed home a good Joseph Chetcuti cross. Qormi continued to attack with striker Chima Dozie missing a sitter in front of goal.
On 26 minutes Qormi took the lead for the first time when Carmel Formosa scored his second personal goal when he again headed home, this time a Kurt Zammit long ball. On 35 minutes Qormi were unlucky not to build a two-goal cushion when Joseph Farrugia’s shot was deflected by the Mellieha goalkeeper against the post.
Six minutes from time Mellieha scored the equaliser when William Borg made full use of a Camoin defensive blunder to head past a bewildered Farrugia.
Ten minutes after the resumption of play Mellieha were back in the lead when following another defensive lapse, this time by Jospeh Farrugia, Wayne Borg St John made his way inside the area and passed to Calabretta who easily scored from close range.
However Qormi equalised again four minutes later when Dozie’s shot was partially saved by the Mellieha goalkeeper and Joseph Farrugia made amends when he shot home the rebound.
Ten minutes from time Mellieha scored what proved to be the winner when Calabretta was floored inside the area by Francica, and Wayne Borg St John scored from the penalty spot.
Qormi went desperately in search of the equaliser even if they lost Chetcuti who was sent off six minutes from time. Substitute Bjorn Dalli had the best chances even hitting the post in injury time.
