The Safi local council categorically denies that the development of a new supermarket is within the limits of Safi, as implied in the article AD slams Mepa approval of new supermarket (TMID, 10 December).

Furthermore, Saviour Sammut of Alternattiva Demokratika has no right to speak on behalf of the Safi local council. As reported in the named article Mr Sammut also commented that the development area “forms part of a landscape that the Safi local council had pledged to turn into a belvedere”.

This is completely untrue, so much so that the area in question is not within the Safi boundary according to local boundaries as specified in the Local Councils Act.

Furthermore, it is also untrue that the Safi local council pledged to turn this land into a belvedere. Mr Sammut has used unfounded information and tried to demerit the Safi local council for the sake of his issue.

Without entering into the issue of the development, once again I reiterate that the land in question is not within the Safi boundary, and the Safi local council has never pledged to turn this area or any other area within the vicinity of the development into a belvedere.
