Coventry goal-hero Michael Mifsud believes his goalscoring exploits in the FA Cup demolition of Blackburn proved he can make the grade in the Barclays Premier League.
Mifsud, commenting after his two-goal burst which helped to eliminate Premier side Balckburn Rovers from the FA Cup last Saturday, paid tribute to all the other team members. “”We knew this wasn’t going to be an easy game but every one of us played with his heart and gave his best to get the result,?he was quoted as saying.
Nicknamed “the Mosquito?for the way he pesters defenders, Mifsud, 26, also netted two goals to give Coventry a famous 2-0 Carling Cup win against Manchester United at Old Trafford last September.
He has now scored 15 goals for Coventry this season and not only has he become an idol at Coventry, but he is also a target for some Premier clubs, among which are Reading and Wigan Athletic.
Mifsud is not afraid of a move to a Premier club. He said: “I always believe in my ability and the Premier League is where I want to be.?
Commenting about the victory over Blackburn, Mifsud said: “The back four were just amazing and the midfield ran a marathon. The three of us up front (Mifsud, Leon Best and Dele Adebola) were a threat all the time. Blackburn had their own chances, particularly in the second half, but we should have won by more.?
Before joining Coventry, Mifsud had also been a hit with Lillestrom in Norway where he had also finished top scorer in the first season three seasons ago. Earlier, he had also played for Kaiserslautern in the Bundesliga, though he had made his name already in Malta with Sliema Wanderers.
Sky Blues boss Iain Dowie said: “Michael is having a cracking season but I think he’d be the first to say he’s given the platform from his team-mates. He’s had a little dip in recent weeks but it’s good to see him back on form and the second goal said a lot about him.?
Little more than a fortnight ago the Sky Blues were faced with the grim prospect of entering administration and being docked 10 points.
Ray Ranson’s group Sisu Capital bought the club to avert that fate and Dowie’s men hinted at a brighter future on the pitch.
Blackburn manager Mark Hughes admitted Coventry thoroughly deserved their win because they were the better side.
