Zebbug-Mdina K 3-0

Zebbug played an excellent tactical game during the first period and did not allow their opponents to settle down with continuous pressing in the midfield sector. Zebbug broke the deadlock in the 10th minute with Nazzareno Abela rounding Sciberras before hitting in from close-range to give his team a deserved lead.

In the 17th minute an Errol Cachia free-kick was saved by Sciberras who was again in action on two further occasions to stop efforts by Jeremy Gatt and a Keith Farrugia free-kick.

Five minutes before the end of the first period Rangers’ striker Nazzareno Abela hit wide following a personal effort.

Zebbug confirmed their excellent performance after the change of ends and after going close through Jeremy Gatt, they made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute as Errol Cachia’s corner-kick was headed in by Jonathan Zammit.

Mdina failed to react with the Rangers continuing to push forward and in the 80th minute George Saliba crossed from the right flank for Nazzareno Abela to shoot at goal from close-range. The Mdina keeper somehow kept the ball out only for Lawrence Vella to beat him with a low shot for an emphatic and merited 3-0 win for the leaders.

Section B

Pembroke-Gudja 1-1

The first-half proved to be a very balanced affair with Pembroke going close early on through two attempts by Steve Micallef.

Then the Gudja goalkeeper Glen Zammit saved with difficulty off a Jacques Scerri header but it was Gudja who broke the deadlock in the 34th minute through substitute Franklyn Abela who headed in from a cross by veteran Maurice Muscat.

Pembroke’s immediate reaction produced a Carlo Leonardi shot which was cleared off the goal line and a shot by Steve Micallef which was well saved by Zammit.

Gudja suffered a setback five minutes after the restart when Reno Debono was booked for a second time and was sent off.

Pembroke pushed forward and were close on various occasions but they managed to equalise in the 77th minute as a cross by Luke Desira was finished off by Carlo Lenardi who minutes earlier had missed a glaring opportunity.

Pembroke were again close through Jeffrey Fenech and Antoine Briffa with Gudja wasting an easy opportunity through Donald Lia.
