The Sliema Youth Band of the Socjeta Filarmonica Sliema will once again start the New Year with a big band concert. The concert will be held on Saturday 19 January at the new auditorium of the Convent of the Sacred Heart, St Julian’s.
Under the music direction of Mro Sigmund Mifsud (pictured right) the Sliema Youth Big Band will engage the audience with an energetic programme featuring pop music, selected numbers from well known musicals and film soundtracks as well as swing standard numbers. The line-up of singers will include Ludwig Galea, Martina Borg, Gloriana Arpa, Ritienne Azzopardi and Vittorio Gauci. Comperes for this concert will be tv personalities Xandru Grech and Nirvana.
The vision of Dr Tonio Portugeshe some six years ago to form a youth wind band, has not only been confirmed, but has proven to be another success story for the Socjeta Filarmonica Sliema. The Sliema Youth Band continued its achievements when it made its transition from the regular formation of a wind band to that of a big band. The Sliema Youth Band has engaged into a regular calendar of thriving activities and productions giving varied vocal and instrumental programmes including pop music numbers.
Sigmund Mifsud, founder and band master of the Sliema Youth Band, continues in his belief in the local youths talent. Moreover, local band clubs are still the opportunity location for a start and growth in a musical career – just as Socjeta Filarmonica Sliema was for himself.
