Passages features over 30 abstract paintings by Lewis Zammit. The exhibition will occupy the ground floor main hall at St James Cavalier, centre for creativity, Valletta Malta and will run until 18 February.

The exhibition features work which was mainly produced within the last eight years. It proposes a visual experience divulging an ongoing process in search of an ethereal combination of space, form and time.

The main preoccupation in process derives from a spiritual journey towards the absolute. It is an invitation to a visual experience that gives one a sense of spiritual freedom. Each painting endeavours to open a window on the infinite and the boundless, where space and form co-exist anomalously in a way which is intangible but which will lead you to venture within.

Ironically, the inspirations come from a constant sense of observation of the natural world, which is eventually moulded and transformed into a language of abstract forms. The palette, brushworks and various other painterly techniques are usually the source for new horizons within the unfolding of each painting experience.

The ultimately aspiration is that each painting transmits to the spectator a spiritual journey with the same way the artist experience while in the process of creation.

About the artist

Born on January 1971, Lewis Zammit commenced Visual Art studies in 1986 under the supervision of Alfred Chircop. In 1998, he completed with distinction a Diploma course in painting at the Malta School of Art, under the supervision of Joseph Casha and Tony Sciberras.

He was rewarded for first in course and Minister’s Prize for developing an intensely personal idiom in Fine Arts. In 1998 he completed a Bachelor’s Honours degree in History of Art, and in 2003 Master’s degree in History of Art at the University of Malta.

Exhibited works at the Museum of Fine Arts, Valletta; The Grand Salon, Museum of Archaeology, Valletta; Mdina Cathedral Museum and The University of Malta. His paintings can be found at various local public and personal collections as well as in England, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, USA and Australia.

Mr Zammit works as a Visual Art Educator at St. Michael Foundation for Education, San Gwann.
