Lang And Hili win St Patrick’s AC Awards

Malta Independent Saturday, 12 January 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

St. Patrick’s AC recently honoured Drew Lang and Carmen Hili as their club Athletes of the Year in a ceremony held at the Coastline Hotel.

“Finishing as the clubs’ top athlete at the club which is very important because I have been top athlete six times. After finishing joint top last year it was quite pleasing to win again this time round!”

Similar feelings were echoed by Camen Hili after her honour. “Personally I run due to personal satisfaction and my biggest challenge is always to run faster than I’ve ever before.”

“Nevertheless, it is pretty pleasing to receive such titles and it was an extremely positive way to end the year.”

Jonathan Balzan and Simon S. Camilleri came second and third respectively in the men whilst in the women those spots were filled by Angela Sammut and Marica Micallef.

Jessica Gauci won the best youth athlete at the club which was a fitting honour seeing that she broke the cadet discus throwing national record, setting it at 24.36m.

Equally fitting was the award for Simon Spiteri who has been developing very well and who must be commended not only for his sporting attitude but also for his dedication having sat through the IAAF Level 1 coaching course despite still being too young to undertake the qualifications.

The Cadets category was won by Stephanie Davies whereas Carl Mario Zammit came out top in the intermediate section.

Participation

As always, the race participation points scheme was eagerly contested and kept all members on their toes.

Eventually, this was won by Manwel Spiteri with a total of 3461 points.

Marica Micallef won the women’s category with a total of 2538 points.

The rest of the men who finished in the top ten were: Drew Lang, Lee Micallef, Sinclair Grima, Charles Abela, Emile Vassallo, Paul Grima, Wally Ghiller, Jude Zammit and Renato Caruana.

The second and third placed women were Carmen Hili and Angela Sammut who were also the top women in the over 35 and over 40 categories.

The age categories were won as follows: David Jones (O/40), Rueben Debono (O/45), Joe Zerafa (O/50), Peter Barbara (O/55), Edwin Spiteri (O/60).
