Exclusivity? What Exclusivity?

Malta Independent Monday, 14 January 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Sports programme presenters should learn the meaning of certain words before they toss them about erroneously.

Three local stations – NET, ONE and Education 22 tried to beat each other to cover the arrival of the Juventus contingent on the day they arrived.

While ONE TV had recorded interviews with prominent Juventus officials and players, NET had a live programme with local personalities prior to the arrival of the Italian team. Education 22 also prepared a live programme with local sports personalities.

When it came to live broadcasts of the arrival of the Juventus aircraft each station had a commentator at the airport. While ONE TV was mistakenly saying that the plane had arrived and then discovered it was the wrong one, the three commentators were repeatedly saying it was an “exclusive” transmission.

Dear commentators, “exclusive” means that you are the only station transmitting the event. The only exclusivity was NET’s interview with the Juventus coach and some players at the hotel where they were residing.

One last thing – why did TVM completely ignore the event during the whole evening?
