Basketball: Local Referees in Europe this week

Malta Independent Monday, 14 January 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Local international basketball referee, Bernard Vassallo, will be again in action when he will referee in Spain next Wednesday after he was nominated by FIBA to control the interesting FIBA Euroleague Group B game between Halcon Salamanca and ZV Prague (Czech Republic).

With two games to go before the end of the group stage, there is a tough battle for the last two spots out of the four open for qualification from the six-team group.

French side Bourges (who beat Salamanca this week) is third with four wins while Salamanca follow behind with three successes.

Vassallo was nominated by FIBA to referee this game, to be played in the Pabellon Wurzburg.

This will be Vassallo’s second visit to Salamanca after having already refereed the game Salamanca vs Pecs (Hungary) 70-65, also valid for the Euroleague, early last year.

Meanwhile, the other local international referee, Gordon Barbara, will also be officiating a FIBA game next Wednesday when he will be in Venice, Italy, to referee the FIBA Cup return match between Reyer Venezia and the Cypriot side, KV Imperial.

Venezia won the first leg, played in Lemessos (Cyprus), 74-70 and should start as favourites to pass to the next round.
