The United States government has revoked the visa of former Bank of Tanzania Governor Daudi Ballali, whose appointment was rescinded by President Jakaya Kikwete last week on allegations of embezzlement and abuse of office.

Ballali was reportedly hospitalised at a Boston Hospital. He is suffering from an unidentified disease and is said to be in critical condition.

The Guardian said that unconfirmed reports have indicated that Ballali has already left the US and is now in Malta. This information is yet to be verified.

The British High Commission in Dar-es-Salaam has also said that the former governor has not fled to the UK. The British Embassy’s Press and Public Affairs Officer, Omari Saidi, said briefly: “As far as the British High Commission is concerned, Ballali is not in the UK.”

President Kikwete fired Ballali as BoT governor last week for incurring multi-billion losses to the nation, mostly through dubious payments and dealing with phoney companies in 2005.
