Three construction workers were treated for injuries and shock yesterday, after part of a ceiling caved in at a construction site in St Julian’s.

The cave-in occurred at about 3.15pm. It is understood that part of the ceiling of – what used to be – Chains, in Borg Olivier Street caved in during excavation works.

A man of African origin is understood to have suffered broken bones, but was not diagnosed as being in critical condition.

Two Maltese men, aged 43 and 23, were also taken to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment.

Eyewitnesses said that the work had been going on for some weeks and that fortunately, the workers had been wearing hard hats and safety boots.

The police arrived and cordoned off the area.

Duty magistrate Anthony Vella was informed of the incident, and appointed a number of experts to assist in an on-site inquiry.

St Julian’s district police are also investigating.
