This bottom of the table clash went Marsa’s way thanks to their only decent shot at goal scored by Jeremy Dalli on 57 minutes.

At the end StPatrick had nothing to show for their territorial superiority. But apart from this St Patrick’s performance left much to be desired as Marsa deserved their win for their spirited display especially in defence.

The Saints are now firmly anchored at the bottom of the table, having lost two direct clashes against Dingli and yesterday against Marsa.

Joseph Achukwu was outstanding in midfield, helped by Kevin Xerri and Jean Paul Zammit.

St Patrick were the better team in the first half even though they were not very dangerous in front of goal. The Saints had new signing Haruna Doda making his debut the third foreigner to play for them this season. Goalmouth actions were scarce in the first half. On 19 minutes Shaun Magro beat a couple of defenders before testing goalkeeper Spiteri who made a good save.

At the start of the second half Marsa took a surprise lead on 57 minutes when Kevin Xerri’s clearance was deflected towards the completely unmarked Jeremy Dalli who beat the onrushing Azzopardi with a grounder. For the rest of the match St Patrick stormed forward but their approach was rather pathetic as they never really tested goalkeeper Spiteri. The Marsa custodian was only called to intercept crosses, as Marsa central defender Darren Vella played a blinder to keep his opponents at bay.

However two minutes from time St Patrick had their best chance when Thomas Caruana hit the crossbar with a long range effort.

Senglea Athletics showed all their class yesterday completely beating Mellieha to go on top of the table with a game in hand over Tarxien.

The match was a one-sided affair with Senglea displaying some brilliant football in the process to legitimate their leadership.

Their classy midfield composed of Cuschieri, Tanti, Bonello and Grech is surely the best in this category. And with strikers like Kenneth Abela and Ewurun up front, Richard Mercieca’s boys were simply irresistible.

Senglea took the initiative from the start pushing their opponents in their own penalty area. On 16 minutes Senglea forged ahead when Kenneth Abela passed to the onrushing Ewurun who shot low into the corner of the net.

Six minutes later Senglea went close again with a well orchestrated move finished off by Mark Tanti whose dipper was well saved by Gauci.

Senglea again went close a couple of minutes later with Ewurun passing towards Kenneth Abela who shot over the bar from an ideal position.

On 30 minutes Senglea had another good opportunity when Mark Tanti could have scored from close range, but Gauci was saved again for Mellieha.

The Blues’ only chance came on 36 minutes when Calabretta made way on the right and crossed towards Borg St John who shot slightly wide.

On the resumption Senglea put their minds at rest when Chris Cuschieri fired home a beauty from well outside the area.

Senglea were now in full command and on 68 minutes they went further ahead when Clint Caruana’s bombshell slammed against the crossbar and from the rebound Kenneth Abela was on hand to head home. And minutes later Senglea went close again when Ewurun hit the crossbar.

But the fourth goal was in the air as Kenneth Abela lobbed beautifully home on 73 minutes.
