Illegal Parking at Bugibba

Malta Independent Sunday, 27 January 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

From Mr R. W Ciantar

The attached photo shows the, should I say accepted, illegal parking which is continually (particularly on Sunday afternoons) taking place in Bugibba square, which is an area purposely designated as a pedestrian -zone.

Locals know this area as “il- Gallarija”.

Throughout the past year I have attempted to bring this to the council’s attention at various council meetings but never had the support of the council majority.

While they all conceded that there is a potential danger to pedestrians and a decision was in fact taken on the matter, the only measure taken so far was a letter written to the Bugibba police station on the subject. However, no effective enforcement has been implemented.

To date, the mayor and his majority still find all sorts of excuses to delay the required work to solve this problem once and for all, i.e. the installation of bollards to block vehicular access.

I personally find this as being most irresponsible since we seem to accept the fact that pedestrians, be they children or adults, have to crisscross and share the area with vehicles illegally entering the said area.

One wonders whether the fact that the mayor has his own business establishments precisely in the vicinity may carry weight with regard to the delays in carrying out this work.
