A minute’s silence in memory of former Stompers player Bojan Nikolic, who passed away last week, was observed before the two MRFU Cup fixtures.

Four yellow cards were awarded in this untidy and ill disciplined game in which Qormi Sharks played three experienced guest players, who helped tighten their game.

Centre Saviour Aquilina opened the scoring for Qormi Sharks to take an early lead with a determined run against poor marking by Overseas, but the Overseas backs soon began to combine well to score two converted tries by Center Greg Van Reeven and scrum half Yohan Mayorgas.

Qormi Sharks came back with a powerful barreling charge from the tight head prop Andrew Galea to the line from which right flanker Michael Bonavia burrowed over, only for left winger Paul Sparling to score another to give Overseas a 19-10 half time lead.

After losing an injured Andrew Galea, Sharks were unable to contain Overseas who reveled in the increased possession. Substitute Dean Mifsud Bonicci, number 8 Piers Allen and left flanker Andrew O’Reilly stood out and center Edward Axisa, newly transferred has taken his game to a higher standard with his new team. French scrum half Yohan Mayorgas showed his class with some fine scrum base breaks and was made MRFU Man of the Match.

n his last match before leaving to work abroad for a couple of months Stompers captain Patrick Satariano put on a dazzling display to score four tries, win the MRFU Man of the Match, and inspire his team to a clinical demolition of Alligators. No matter how hard Alligators tackled and covered the sheer speed of foot, handling and thought of Stompers gave them an edge throughout this match. Furthermore Stompers showed the strength of their squad by fielding several of their replacement players.

Left winger Jovan Reljic was one who took advantage with several determined runs and scoring two good tries. Nineteen year old Luke Debattista on the opposite wing showed exciting potential, timing angled bursts at speed plus strength and balance. He could be pushing for a full international cap in the future.

The bulky tight head prop Dragan Cerketa, made a surprising try with a forty metre sprint, holding off several of the covering Alligators.

The combinations and timed passing of Stompers added up to a classic display of inspiring rugby which must have put them in good heart for a future without several of their unavailable stalwarts.
