Baseball: National League Starts this weekend

Malta Independent Friday, 1 February 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

The first official pitch of the Maltese Baseball League will be thrown tomorrow when the reigning champions Mellieha Northenders face the Devils at 1.30pm on the Marsa Baseball Field.

Both teams seem to have the same players as last season with the Devil’s having a few new faces. The Devils have shown signs of improvements with there players improving swiftly but will it be enough against the Northenders having most of the strong arms in the National team.

The Northenders team captain and catcher, Keith Bartolo with a strong arm and a hard-hitting bat to match will be keeping the Devils on their toes as usual. Keith is one of Malta’s best batters and every opposing team has to be very careful on how to pitch to him or they just may see the baseball soaring over the fence for another homerun. Keith, like his father and coach, Raymond Bartolo have been the inspiration of the Mellieha baseball youth ever since they started the club.

Sunday’s game will start at 2.00pm in Sannat Gozo with the home team Gozo Tornadoes looking for a win on home soil against the Mustang’s. It’s always an exciting game to watch between these teams with both teams having a mixture of young upcoming talent and experienced veterans.

The Mustangs have more rookies on their team this year while the Gozo team seem to be the more experienced side. Gozo will be out for as good win to start off their season, especially since they will be celebrating their 10th anniversary this year.
