I cannot find words good enough to praise last Sunday’s leader. It expressed exactly my opinion about the conditions of the union of Malta with the EU. But of course the editor expressed it in much more detail and more eloquently as he is much more informed about the matter than myself.
I have picked out those parts that struck me as being of great importance: “Except for Ireland, our Parliament is wrong as well. Everyone but a fool (or a minister) knows that the treaty is the rejected 2005 Constitution in all but name. French President Valery Giscard D’Estang says so, Angela Merkel says so explicitly” … “this (Malta) Parliament, against our advice (I and others personally warned Fredu Sant), went ahead and ratified the Rome Treaty even when it was clear it was doomed” … “approved unanimously by our local Parliament, (a big lie, a big spin)” … “no vote was asked for” … passed on the Nem. Con procedure” … “no one from the Opposition benches had asked for a vote”… or… “the Opposition had even grunted its assent to the bill” … there were NOT that many of them (in Parliament to vote).
“It is the essence of the European vision that citizens are consulted on the most important matters”... “was demanded both by the EU and by the Maltese as well that membership in the EU was passed after the approval of the majority” …
“… not least because the Labour Party, for reasons it now prefers to forget” … “why are the two sides so afraid of denying us our say?”
“… nonetheless, its advocates do not want to take the risk (of a referendum)”… “the democratic case for a referendum is corrupted”.
“The whole structure of EU is so fragile it cannot be subjected to scrutiny by the people.
“The two parties are ferociously pro-EU” ... “don’t they see that by taking decisions on behalf of the people without the people themselves being consulted, they are laying the foundations for much mischief in the years to come.
“The whole grand European ideal is adulterated. In time the EU will have turned itself into a new Soviet and its grip on the citizens will be as fragile as the Iron Curtain turned out to be.
“An EU that is afraid of the people’s vote is an EU that has forgotten that its ideal is based on democracy.”
