“We are building a strong and high quality education system – one of this government’s three main sectors – and I know that, even though there is still a lot to be done, one still appreciates the work and results achieved so far,” Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said on Sunday.

Dr Gonzi was speaking during a visit to two new schools which are being built – one in Cospicua and the other in Victoria. The prime minister laid the foundation stone at the boys’ secondary school in Victoria.

He criticised the Labour’s views that the government’s investments in amenities and new schools are simply money spent on buildings.

“Today there are more students that are continuing their studies, the highest number ever of people (and children) who can read and write and a general improvement across this sector,” said Dr Gonzi.

However, he went on to say, this is not enough and the government has already begun implementing reforms in the educational sector to improve the quality of education.

Furthermore, said the prime minister, the government is working for more, and better employment so that youths who finish their studies will be able to find jobs they want.
