Through collaboration with local councils, a new Labour government will fund two projects in each locality that are out of the local councils’ budget, Opposition Leader Alfred Sant said yesterday during a visit in Zejtun.

On his arrival, several petards leaving trails of red smoke were let off from a roof close to the square. Several stands were set up around the square describing the work carried out by Zejtun local council while women sitting at tables were making the traditional Maltese ganutell.

In a brief comment, Dr Sant said that the work carried out by Labour local councils is a clear example of what the Labour Party has to offer on a national basis.

He pointed out that the Labour council of Zejtun managed to implement 90 per cent of what it promised during the past three years.

The Opposition Leader said that the two projects that will be implemented in Zejtun will focus on upgrading the housing estate in Hal-Tmiem area and finishing off the ring road.

“In its vision document, the Labour Party has listed measures and proposals to improve families’ quality of life which will safeguard their dignity,” said Dr Sant.

The family will be at the centre of the Labour Party’s new plan – both on a local and a national basis, said the opposition leader.

Families with children deserve the highest quality of life to ensure that their children’s development is assured, he said.

“A new Labour government will strengthen the fight against illiteracy in each locality to ensure that all children receive the best education possible,” he said.
