Heritage Malta recently welcomed around 60 Year Two students from the St Joan Antide School in Gudja, together with their teachers at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Valletta, where they took part in a tailor-made treasure hunt focusing on various paintings housed within the Museum. The aim of this cultural visit was to engage students with the works of art and to encourage them to look for details and other visual clues so as to be able to complete a number of tasks. The museum was buzzing with activity and children spent a whole morning trying to decipher the hidden codes.

The treasure hunt was followed by a painting session within the museum halls. Students were encouraged to draw their favourite painting and share their ideas with their friends. All in all this has been a wonderful experience for the students and their comments upon their return to school indicate that similar activities enhance museum visits and students would be able to learn about art in a most enjoyable setting. Museum educational programmes generate a high level of interest in the collection and encourage students to engage with the works of art in a creative way.
