Next in the cycle of cultural presentations organised by Din l-Art Helwa, will be the lecture by Anton Grech on Thursday 14 February, which will focus on the main revolutionary concepts of 20th century Art and how they effected recent contemporary Art in Malta.

Anton Grech will describe the changes brought about by photography towards the mid-nineteenth century and the role of artists like Cézanne, Matisse and Picasso. He will also discuss the effects the Second World War had on the New Art and the new developments in America. He will refer to the work of Marcel Duchamp, the concept of the “ready-made” and the influence it had on the following decades, while discussing the parallel development of Art in Malta in the twentieth century. He will conclude with a short debate on the local public definition of contemporary art and public Art in other European countries.

The lecture, which will take place at the Judge Caruana Curran Hall at 133 Melita Street Valletta, will commence at 6pm. Those intending to participate are advised to be seated by 5.45pm. Admission is free of charge but donations to Din l-Art Helwa’s many restoration projects are welcome.
