Young Malta champion Matthew Asciak is currently in Denmark taking part in an indoor international tournament.
Recently he had to forfeit participation in a tournament in Sfax, Tunisia, as he is currently ranked 502. Last year he dropped 299 places as he lost all the points he had won in Malta when he had won the international tournament at the Marsa Sports Club in April 2006.
This was because of several factors. His participation in some events had to be halted as he suffered from glandular fever, which kept him out for a full six weeks.
He then played in the Small States of Europe tournament in Monaco. Soon after he broke his wrist and was ruled out for another six weeks. This forced him to miss out on all tournaments in summer, thus losing all the points he had accumulated.
He is now trying to recover lost ground, even if he will be sitting for the A Levels exams next April/May.
Asciak is the current Malta champion and has held the title for three consecutive years, the youngest ever at 15.
