On Monday 21st January 2008 the Malta Scrabble Club held its 26th Annual General Meeting at the club in Floriana.
The outgoing President of the club, Mr Jojo Delia, briefed the members present on the activity undertaken by the committee during 2007. This was followed by the Secretary’s address, which focused on club competition results and international affairs.
Particular mention was made of the participation of no less than three local players in the World Scrabble Championship held in Mumbai, India, during November 2007. Whilst the performance of all three players was highly creditable, local champion Ms Theresa Camilleri placed 26th from a field of 104 players. This is considered an exceptional result when considering the very high standard of this tournament, where the elite players of countries from around the world compete for the title of World Champion.
The participation of local players in the bi-annual World Scrabble Championship is only possible through the personal commitment and sacrifice of the players themselves, and a contribution made from the very limited funds of the club, due to lack of sponsors.
The meeting was concluded with the election of the club committee for 2008, where Mr. Mario Saliba was nominated and elected as President. Mr. Saliba has been active in the local scrabble and sports scene for over 20 years, and has also served on the club committee in various capacities in previous years.
National league
Twenty-seven players are taking part in this year’s edition of the Scrabble National League. Theresa Camilleri will be defending the title she won during the past two years from among a field of 12 players in the I Division, including no less than three former champions, namely David Delicata, Mario Saliba and Sammy Mangion, as well as strong players such as Jojo Delia and Cecil Muscat.
There will be also eight players taking part in the Second Division and seven in the Third Division. The National League is being played at the MPFA HQs, Floriana.
