The new thermal treatment facility at Marsa is once again fully operational after undergoing a period of scheduled maintenance, the waste management company WasteServ said. Heating up and calibration were done throughout yesterday and waste will start being incinerated by this morning.

The incinerator is expected to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week for approximately 310 days a year. During the other days (which amount to around one week every six weeks), maintenance of the plant will be carried out. While this is being done, waste will be stored in a designated large refrigerated room where it is kept until incineration.

WasteServ said that yesterday it received a series of complaints related to fumes and smells. Upon investigation, however, it transpired that these were in fact caused by nearby construction work involving a crane and a cement mixer, which were completely unrelated to the incinerator and to WasteServ.
