The Malta Canoe Federation recently held its AGM at the association premises in Marsamxett, which was also attended by Joe Cassar, General Secretary of the Malta Olympic Committee.
A new committee was elected by present members with Dr Julian Mamo being elected as president by popular support.
Craig Wightman, the outgoing president, thanked everyone for a hard year’s work. He pointed out that the last year saw foreign and local participation in the National Championships, a successful charity event which was held on 1 May as well as two round Malta Challenges. It is evident from participation in numerous events that the sport is growing with new members taking interest in the various disciplines namely touring, racing and polo.
The new committee is tackling this year’s challenges head on with the development of a youth programme for secondary school children being the focal point of the discussion. A canoe polo league is also anticipated to commence as well as a more extensive local racing programme.
The Malta Canoe Federation thanked all those who stepped down from the committee for their dedication and contribution to the sport over the past year.
The committee has been elected as follows: Dr Julian Mamo – President; Alex Rizzo – Vice President; Dr Nicholas Valenzia – Secretary; Damian Schembri – Treasurer; Christopher Camilleri – Technical Director; Craig Wightman – International Secretary; Nicola Borg Costanzi – Public Relations Officer.
