‘Units’ For the disabled at St Luke’s

Malta Independent Sunday, 17 February 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

From Ms S. Cassar

Being disabled myself, I disagree with what was approved at the Malta Labour Party conference regarding the issue of transforming St Luke’s Hospital into “units” for disabled people. It is not fair to us that, when we get to the stage when nobody can take care of us, we go there. For me, it is nothing but an institution.

Everyone has his/her own disability – all totally different from one another. In my opinion, the best thing is that we are provided with small homes in the heart of the community. In this way, all disabled people could continue with their own social life.

Although things are changing slowly, there is still a lot more to be done. I hope that something can be done in the near future so that disabled people can have a better life.
