Two goals scored in the first thirty minutes of the match gave Dingli an easy win over Mellieha in a battle between the two newly promoted sides. Dingli were worthy winners thanks to a solid display in the first half. Jeremy Agius was outstanding together with Chris Ciappara who scored the first goal.

This win lifts Dingli to a more healthy position in the middle of the table, while Mellieha are still anchored in the bottom of the table where they will have to fight hard with Marsa and St Patrick to avoid the drop.

The first half was very interesting with fast flowing football. Dingli were surely the better outfit as they were more dangerous in attack. Dingli forged ahead on 19 minutes when Chris Ciappara headed home a good cross from the right flank by Etienne Farrugia..

Four minutes later the same the same Ciappara had another good effort when he headed a Fabio Cauchi cross from the left, but this time Mellieha goalkeeper Gauci saved.

On 30 minutes Mellieha created their first real danger when Sandro Costa Brasilino who passed to Reuben Vella whose cross was met by Calabretta who first-timed over the bar. A minute later Dingli doubled the score when Mark Galea scored following a good cross by Fabio Cauchi.

Dingli were now in full command and could have easily scored a third on 33 minutes when Chris Ciappara chipped over Gauci but defender Luke Cauchi saved a certain goal clearing off the goal-line.

Three minutes later Mellieha almost reduced the arrears when Ibrahim Tarek lobbed over the bar after a good Brasilino move.

In the second half Mellieha improved a lot hammering their opponents in their own half. But they were rarely dangerous in front of goal apart from an Ibrahim Tarek shot following a cross from Costa Brazilino who was surely the best player for his side.

In the second half Mellieha were the dominant force, but they were not productive in front of goal. Dingli thus could cruise through to a relatively easy victory. Near the end of the match referee Adrian casha ejected two players, one from each side.

Mellieha’s best player yesterday Sandro Costa Brasilino was sent off for after receiving his second yellow card. On the other end Dingli’s Christian Muscat was sent off for a nasty foul on William Borg.
