Whoever follows the news every day about the election campaign, cannot miss hearing a new political lie each day uttered by Dr Lawrence Gonzi! We have heard him allege that a Labour government would cut social services, when it was Labour which created social services and has always ameliorated them. It was a Nationalist Party government that denied many thousands of families the children’s allowance for 10 long years. And now, on the eve of a general election, it has decided to restart giving children allowance to all families, including those who earn more than Lm10,000, namely the families the Nationalist Party government had discriminated against for such a long time. But, of course, those who were denied the children’s allowance for 10 years are not being given anything back!

Another political lie was Gonzi’s allegation that a Labour government will remove income tax on overtime work but overtime work will have to be paid at the normal hourly rate. Dr Alfred Sant immediately gave the lie to Dr Gonzi’s allegation since overtime work will continue to be paid as at present, depending on the various agreements between employers, employees and unions.

Another political lie fabricated by Dr Gonzi was when he said that businesses and the self-employed would not benefit from Labour’s pledge to cut the surcharge on water and electricity bills by half. Once again, Dr Sant made it plain that Dr Gonzi was lying through his teeth!

This is all for today. I am looking forward to Dr Gonzi’s next political lie since these have become daily occasions to have a good laugh!
