The all-out attempt of the governing party to instil the fear of change in the electorate shows that it is short of innovative ideas to govern any longer. This method of instilling fear into the electorate is the last straw that broke the camel’s back.

A change of government is the best way to encourage new hope in the long-suffering Maltese families. The spiralling cost of living, the declining standards since Gonzi took over, the minimum economic growth when compared to that achieved by other new EU countries, the low level of achievement in the education sector, the inefficient medical services, the mismanagement of taxpayers’ money in major public projects and the environmental disaster that we are in, are the reasons why change is so badly needed.

Dr Gonzi may project himself as an affable leader with a “safe pair of hands” and a charismatic smile, or should I say, sarcastic smile, but he proved to be impotent to bring about the desired change. He was duty bound to change his Cabinet and bring in some new faces to energise it.

Of course change brings uncertainties. But change is always a seed for renewal. This country needs the energy, enthusiasm and determination of a new team to improve the quality of life of its people. Democracy thrives on the periodic change of the leadership of the country. It is the duty of everyone to bring about this change for the sake of our beloved country.

There is nothing to fear more than fear itself. We need to tackle the real issues that affect the quality of life of our families. We need to address the spiralling cost of living, the poor service provided by our public health system, the low education standards achieved by almost half of our young people, the lack of proper employment opportunities, Mepa’s inconsistencies/ favouritism, the considerable reduction of our CO2 emissions and several other threats to our quality of life.

Let us embrace change. Let us not allow anyone to use the politics of despair and fear to deny us the opportunity for a better life. Let us work hard to make our country a nation of high achievers. Let us use our democratic right to alternate the party that leads the country. Do not be afraid, go and vote for change for your and your country’s benefit.
