A Clyde Camoin goal midway through the second half was enough for Qormi to beat bottom placed St Patrick to keep their chances for the promotion race intact. Qormi pushed more in the second part of the match and were rewarded with a well taken goal that proved to be the winner.

St Patrick could have easily snatched an important draw, and would have deserved it especially after their first half showing. But in the second period the Saints were too defensive minded and paid the price in the end.

The first half was rather quite with St Patrick enjoying the lions' share of the proceedings but with Qormi having the better scoring chances.

On 15 minutes Qormi made their first attempt at goal when Joseph Chetcuti shot slightly wide following a Joseph Farrugia freekick. A minute later Qormi were unlucky when Lee Grima’s shot on the turn slammed against the crossbar.

On 18 minutes St Patrick hit back with a Haruna Doda fierce drive that was deflected by the Qormi goalkeeper. For the rest of the first half St Patrick dominated the match but failed to produce good chances in front of goal.

In the second half Qormi started on a better note as the Saints were pushed back in their defensive shell. On 65 minutes a good overhead kick by Joseph Farrugia went inches wide with Cassar beaten.

St Patrick had a good break minutes later with Failla passing towards Thomas Caruana who shot straight into Farrugia's waiting hands.

On 70 minutes Qormi took the lead when Farrugia passed towards Clyde Camoin who chested the ball well before beating Cassar with a precise diagonal shot.

St Patrick reacted for this setback but the nearest they could get was through distant shots from Gordon Failla. Two minutes from time St Patrick came close to snatch an equaliser when Farrugia lost possession of the ball which fell to Doda’s feet who could hit the post from close range.

In the dying stages referee Spiteri ejected two players from the St Patrick bench, Arnold Buttigieg and Mark Pullicino.
