Senglea obtained a double over neighbours and rivals St. George’s yesterday to move temporarily to the top of the First Division League.

It was a five star performance from Senglea still smarting from last Sunday’s top of the table defeat agaianst Tarxien.

Senglea were in no small way aided by the ejection of St. George’s captain Anthony Bonello after only three minutes. It was not clear what happaned but the referee Marco Borg took the decision after consulting with assistant Philip Agius.

This was surely one of the main factors for yesterday’s demolishing victory by Senglea who were by far superiour. The Saints were rather unlucky in some instances yesterday hitting the post twice and committing an own goal to pave the way for Senglea’s large victory.

Apart from this however, Senglea’s merits are not to be diminished as they played some very good football especially after building a two-goal cushion.

The match came to life after only three minutes with the sending off of Anthony Bonello. This did not have an immediate effect on the match as St. George’s showed the better ideas in the opening stages. In fact Senglea missing the services of star striker Kenneth Abela were found wanting in attack.

Peter Anizoba was dangerous with a powerful drive that was saved by Attard. On 34 minutes Senglea took the lead when Darren Grech crossed towards Glenn Bonello whose shot at goal was slammed into the back of the net by Heathcliff Schembri who beat his own goalkeeper in an attempt to clear.

The Saints?mishaps were not over yet as they were very unlucky minutes later when a Clayton Caruana shot hit the post. However on 43 minutes Senglea doubled the score when Mifsud passed to Bonello who back-heeled towards Ewurun who scored a beauty in the top left corner of the net.

The match was now won and lost with Senglea completely dominating the rest of the game. On the hour Senglea scored the third goal when Glenn Bonello scored after some good work by Ewurun. St. George’s goalkeeper Andrea Gatt effected some good saves to avoid a heavier defeat. He denied Mark Tanti on two occassions.

Near the end of the match Peter Anizoba hit the post for St. George’s, and also missed a sitter when he hesitated in front of goal.

The Saints were further punished for these misses when Senglea scored the fourth and final goal thanks to an incredible run by Darren Grech, finished off by the same player in style.
