This is the present state of Triq il-Htajriet, Mosta, just off E.B. Vella Street. The road has been in such a poor state for months on end, if not years, and the promises that have been made have not been fulfilled. The local council should immediately take up the matter. Residents said that each time it rains it is nearly impossible to drive through this road, and they are risking causing damage to their cars
At last! Those wishing to go down Chadwick Lake hill can do so without risking serious damage to their vehicle. And people can even walk down without risk to limb. The Transport Authority has at last seen fit to give the hill a tarmac surface. The roadway always was in an atrocious state during the rainy season, with the rainwater carving deep pot holes and ditches all along. It is a wonder that it took so long for the resurfacing to be done. But everyone is now grateful, and hoping that it will last.
Residents of St Julian’s know that a local council election is round the corner when they see certain things being done after being neglected for three years. For example, the zebra crossing at the top of Birkirkara Road was re-painted this week. Pity that the local council did not notice that the swings in the same area have been broken for quite some time, and have been left to rot.
The St Julian’s-bound Santa Venera tunnel badly needs some maintenance. It is full of potholes and in the poor lighting they are not very visible, though they are large and deep, especially at the exiting end. Surely it would not take very long to fill them in. One hopes that any work will however be carried out during the night, as otherwise the traffic problems will be enormous.
Mobile phones are useful. Few people can get by without them these days. The problem is that sometimes they can be a nuisance to other people. The silence in church or even in a restaurant can often be shattered when a mobile rings. People should learn to switch their mobile phone onto silent mode when they are in the presence of others. And, when answering the phone, they should keep a low voice so as not to disturb others.
Some pedestrians have the habit of pressing the button to make use of the pedestrian lights but, seeing that no traffic is coming, they cross the street when the light is still green for cars. It is quite annoying for drivers to have to stop, seconds later, but there is then no-one to cross the street. Pedestrians should either wait until the light turns green for them to cross or, if they see no cars coming, they should cross the road without pressing the pelican lights button.
Privacy is the word. Some people who are making use of bank ATMs are annoyed with those waiting in the queue behind them get too close. It annoys them because they would like to carry out their transactions in total privacy, and yet they cannot. Those behind them will know whether they are withdrawing money, and whether the amount withdrawn is high. Perhaps the commercial banks should try to invest in making the ATMs more private for their customers.
No matter how many times it has been said and written that bring-in sites should not be turned into little Maghtabs, people still dump unwanted items close to the skips if these are already full. WasteServ is trying its best to empty the skips as regularly as possible, but sometimes it cannot cope with the demand. People wanting to dispose of unwanted items should either drive to the next bring-in site or take the material back home until the skips are empty.
