Two goals scored in injury time turned the tide in Mosta’s favour yesterday against an unlucky Vittoriosa side. The Stars deserved a better fare for what they produced in the ninety minutes, but as in the first round they were denied by a late penalty.

Vittoriosa had taken the lead just before the break through the best player on the field Evi Parker. Although defending for long stretches in the second half, the Stars were still in command in the second half with their fast breaks.

Mosta dominated the opening stages of the match, with their striker Kalenga going near on two occasions and in both instances the ball went slightly wide.

After this disappointing start Vittoriosa started to get more into the game with Evi Parker and Lagana menacing up front.

Vittoriosa’s first attempt at goal came on 25 minutes when Evi Parker was put through by Darmanin, with the former’s shot well saved by Jonathan Debono. On the half hour Mosta’s Massimo Grima was rather unlucky when his overhead kick went slightly off target.

On 43 minutes Charles Cachia’s dipper was brilliantly saved by Debono and from the resultant corner Vittoriosa took the lead when Anthony Evi Parker back heeled into the net.

In the second half Mosta introduced striker Carlos Camenzuli as they pushed forward for the equaliser. Massimo Grima again tried on overhead kick which was easily saved by Cassar, and the Stars had an Evi Parker goal disallowed.

Mosta’s pressure was fruitless with the only real danger coming from a Chris Pace header that missed the target. On 92 minutes with Mosta submitted to defeat, Carlos Camenzuli headed in a good cross from the right by Chris Sant.

And it was not over yet as Mosta were awarded a penalty two minutes later when the bumpy surface at the Hamrun ground played a nasty trick on Cedric Sciberras who miskicked the ball, with the sphere touching his hands.. Referee Lautier opted for the penalty to the dismay and disbelief of the Vittoriosa players. Defender Steve Borg kept his cool to beat Cassar for an incredible winner.
