No, Edward Mifsud (Respect of others TMID, 6 February), the main argument of your letter was not about tenses: past, present and future, but about the Nationalist responsibility for past Labour atrocities and then blowing them out of proportion. Now that I have shown without any doubt that the Nationalist Party was only a victim of Labour’s shameful past, Mr Mifsud is trying to make us forget the past and think only about the future.
Of course, Mr Mifsud wants us to forget the past! Even Dr Alfred Sant and other high officials invite us to forget the past when they are reminded of their dirty past. Which Labour supporter, after all, wants to be reminded of their past?
New beginning? What new beginning? Dr Sant has already been our Prime Minister and he made such a monumental mess that he was kicked out of office after only 22 months. Unwept, unhonoured and unsung.
Ten years ago, Dr Sant was elected by a majority of 8,000 votes, but he was such a complete failure that in just 20 months he managed to lose his majority and the following election by more than 13,000 votes. Following that humiliating defeat prominent Labour officials publicly declared that Dr Sant had to go. These same people are today showering all sort of praise on the same Dr Sant.
But the best certificate to Dr Sant was given by a high Labour official and today a close collaborator of Dr Sant when he wrote a long article in the special election magazine published by this paper in September 1998. I reproduce only some short quotation: “Dr Sant New Labour expect people to allow the bait that a sabotaged faulty computer is to blame for the exaggerated water and electricity bills. Dr Sant’s way of filling the hofor with indiscriminate higher taxes. Today’s New Labour feels more at home with business organisations. Dr Sant’s solutions for our nation penalised each and every one of us. The low income earners and the pensioners have been abandoned by New Labour. Should Dr Sant obtain a fresh mandate… you may rest assured that he will be riding over our heads in a roller.”
No Nationalist fanatic can give Dr Sant a better certificate!
Forewarned forearmed. It’s up to you now to decide but take no chances because no beating on the breast and no intoning of Miserere will solve your problems. Shame on him who fools you once, but if you allow him to fool you twice, then the shame is on you. Your destiny, your family’s destiny and your country’s destiny are in your hands.
