Cricket: Marsa CC Team commences touring season with victory over HMS Westminster

On Saturday the Marsa C.C team commenced their touring season with a scheduled 30 over game against the HMS Westminster. The game was scheduled to start at 11.30am, was postponed till 1pm due to the rain and reduced to a 25 over game.

Ronnie Sacco won the toss and elected to bowl first for the Marsa team. Barnwell opened the batting for the visitors and Barnwell batting throughout the innings and ending on 91 runs not out.

In his innings he scored seven fours and a six. The Westminster batsmen were all happy with the way Barnwell was batting and gave him the strike as much as possible. The next high score was that of extras being 18.

Holroyd scored eight runs including a six and Vince five. The visitors totalled 133 runs from their allotted overs.

For Marsa the main wicket takers were Tony Slater and Sam Dhandapani who took two wickets each. Dhandapani took his in consecutive balls. Nowell Khosla, Gordon Hewitt, Sunny Krishna and Chris Naudi all took a wicket each.

In reply Marsa opened the batting with Nowell Khosla and Mark G.Sacco. Westminster had a great start by bowling Sacco through the bowling of Wilcox.

Joining Khosla at the crease was Mike Caruana. This pair put on a match winning partnership of a 127 runs before Caruana retired. Caruana scored 56 runs including two fours while Khosla scored 45 runs not out. Between them during their partnership they ran ten threes and a four with the outfield very slow after the morning rain.

Marsa won the game. Marsa were also aided by 35 extras. For HMS Westminster Barnwell also managed a late wicket.

Next Saturday, an Asian XI will take on the rest in a friendly to prepare for the busy touring season. Start will be 11.30am. The nursery will be from 9.30 till 11.30am
