Democracy Of the minority

Malta Independent Saturday, 1 March 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Prof. Arnold Cassola was present in the programme Xarabank (22 February) just to enlighten us about the wisdom of opting for a coalition government. To back his argument he cited Ireland as an example.

Prof. Cassola would have been more at home had he recounted his two years’ experience in the Prodi government, where bickering within the coalition partners resulted in the downfall of one of the worst governments that Italy ever had.

Coalition means a fragile government where the minor partners determine the life of the government. Coalitions are labelled as the democracy of the minority because a minor section of the population dictates to the rest.

Surely the Maltese are not ready to see this travesty of democracy by letting it happen.
