Many contributors are speculating on the possibility of having one or two of the small parties elected to parliament and arguing the pros and cons of such an eventuality.

I shall not delve into the arguments being brought up in order to defend the respective positions because this is not the scope of my letter.

What is not being discussed though is the possible impact on the vote which the army of the so-called undecided voters may have. All polls are confirming that some one third of the respondents are declaring themselves as undecided or are claiming that they shall not vote and this is the crux of the matter. The fact that the number of “undecided” voters is so high, is rendering both big parties extremely uneasy and this is exactly why they are doing the impossible to dissuade people from voting for the small parties.

The more “pessimistic” analysts at Pieta’ and Hamrun are crediting the smaller parties with up to 25,000 votes which given the strength of Azzjoni Nazzjonali and Alternattiva Demokratika in certain districts can possibly mean the election of four or even five candidates yielding from both parties.

Such a scenario would finally bring Malta in line with the rest of Europe and make our democratic system more complete and our parliament a truly parliament of the people. Above all, such a change would be to the benefit us every Maltese citizen, no matter which political belief he/she harbours.
