Malta’s national team finished 93rd in the world team championships in Guangzhou.

The team, comprising Mario Genovese, Edward Baldacchino and David Pace, took part in the fourth division Group N together with Qatar, Jamaica, Sierra Leone, Montenegro and Maldives.

They obtained victories over Sierra Leone and Maldives, but then were defeated by Qatar, Jamaica and Montenegro, finishing fourth in the qualifying round.

Then they went on to beat Uganda as the second phase for the placings got under way, but lost to Kyrgyzstan in the next round to have to play for a place between 93rd and 96th in the final standings.

In a first match, they defeated Maldives 3-1 (they had already beaten them in a Group N match 3-2) and then beat Nicaragua 3-2 to make sure of 93rd placing overall.

One hundred and four teams took part in this world championship.

Against Maldives, it was Edward Baldacchino who led Malta to victory with two wins, over Yasik Mohamed and MM Musnif, while Genovese also won his encounter against Sharufan Ahmed. Pace had earlier lost to Musnif.

In the match against Nicaragua, Baldacchino again registered two wins – against Guillermo Morales and Rodolfo Miranda – while Genovese and Pace lost their match respectively to Rodolfo Miranda and Pedro Perez. In the final, decisive match, Genovese overcame Guillermo Morales narrowly 3-2 to give victory to Malta.
