Rabat maintained their triumphant run at the top with an emophatic 3-0 win over bottom placed Sirens.

Rabat were unlucky early on as Joseph Caruana’s shot bounced off the upright and in the 15th minute the Sirens keeper came out of his goal to save off Keith Micallef. Rabat continued to push forward and deservedly broke the deadlock in the 26th minute through Emanuel Muscat.

Two minutes later Sirens went close through an Adrian Galea free-kick with Rabat replying through a shot by Adam Smeir which hit the post and from the rebound an Alan Zahra attempt was saved by Schembri.

Then Alan Zahra hit just high over the bar with a flying header but four minutes before the break a good move between Chris Schembri and Adam Smeir allowed the latter to shoot in past Schembri and make it 2-0.

Five minutes after the restart the Sirens’ keeper brought off a difficult save to stop a shot by Keith Micallef with Sirens responding through Giovanni Galea who hit just high over the bar.

Rabat were again close through Clint Micallef but they added a third goal in the 73rd minute as a crosshot by Gwyn Vassallo was not controlled by Schembri and Jonathan Bezzina was on hand to shoot in from close-range. In the closing stages Rabat were close through Kayne Said and Alan Zahra with Sirens hitting the post through an Adrian Galea header.

San Gwann -Mgarr 1-0

Mgarr were close early on through two free-kicks taken by Neil Busuttil and Daniel Schembri.

In the 13th minute a Daniel Schembri free-kick bounced off the crossbar and two minutes later the Saints gained a free-kick which was taken by Rennie Forace with Kevin Elll bringing off a difficult save.

Mgarr then wasted an easy opportunity through Chris Abela and on another occasion the San Gwann keeper brought off a difficult save to deny Daniel Schembri. Just before the end of the first-half the Saints were denied by Kevin Ellul who brought off an excellent save off an attempt by Sergio Hili.

The second period belonged to San Gwann who went close in the 52nd minute through Rennie Forace who hit just high from close-range.

On another occasion an effort by Keith Fabri just missed the target with Mgarr wasting a sitter in the 54th minute as Chris Abela shot straiggt into Spiteri when all alone infront of goal.

Ten minutes later San Gwann created a dangerous opportunity through Antoine Zahra but they managed to score the goal that mattered in the 67th minute through Sergio Hili. Mgarr protested for an offside.

Late in the match San Gwann were again close through a Clayton Giordemaina free-kick which was saved by Kevin Ellul.

Lija A-Balzan Y 0-2

Balzan Youths surprised their neighbours with a goal after just five minutes as Gilbert Scerri’s indirect free-kick was headed in by Antoine Sacco.

In the 14th minute Lija were close through a long-range shot by Daniel Scerri which were saved by Mintoff with Balzan replying through a Gilbert Scerri cross which was deflected to a corner-kick and a point-blank shot by Sacco which was saved by Luke Bonnici.

Lija replied through two close efforts by Beppe Antignolo and in the 38th minute Michael Mangion’s shot was cleared off the goal line by Gilbert Scerri.

Balzan were then denied by Bonnici off a Leonid McKay volley and just before the change of ends attempts by Antoine Sacco and Kurt Coleiro were cleared off the line by Hubert Friggieri and Elton Azzopardi respectively.

Balzan gradually dominated the proceedings and in the 57th minute an Antoine Sacco header was well saved by Luke Bonnici.

Six minutes later Balzan made it 2-0 as Gilbert Scerri did all the work which was concluded by Kurt Coleiro as he beat Bonnici with a strong angled shot. Balzan could have added further goals butshots by Ives Bilocca and Antoine Sacco were saved by Bonnici.

In the 85th minute Lija’s defender Daniel Scerri cleared the ball off the goal line to stop a shot by Simon Mizzi and in added time another effort, this time by Kurt Coleiro, was also blocked on the goal line.

Naxxar-Melita 0-1

Naxxar went close in the 12th minute through a Kevin Fenech free-kick which finished just high over the bar.

Naxxar pressed forward but the Amateurs created a dangerous opportunity in the 24th minute through Bjorn Bondin whose low shot was saved by Kevin Agius.

Naxxar were then denied by Sapiano off a shot by Andrew Catania and on another occasion Chris Farrugia hit just wide from a good position. In the closing stages of the first period Melita went close through Jonathan Mifsud with Naxxar replying through Mark Deguara whose effort just misssed the far post.

The Amateurs got hold of the midfield sector during the second period and in the 51st minute a Bjorn Bondin free-kick was saved by Kevin Agius.

Then they were again close through Gregory Degabriele with Naxxar almost taking the lead through Mark Deguara whose shot was blocked by Sapiano.

Melita pushed forward and on two occasions the Naxxar custodian brought fine saves to stop efforts by Bjorn Bondin and Michael Martin but three minutes into injury-time the Amateurs grabbed the winning goal through a header by substitute Luke Micallef.
