This much awaited game produced some good hockey from both sides. The final score of one all was a fair result.

The first attempt on goal was by Young Stars when Ramon Chircop saved well off David Evans and it was the same Evans, on the 11th minute who, after receiving from Mark Camlleri, saw his hit just going wide.

On the 13th, Young Stars won their first short corner from which Ivan Magro could have opened the score had he not squandered a perfect pass from Edward Hughes.

On the 15th, Waylin Abdilla, in the Young Stars goal, saved well a hard hit from Daniel Micallef resulting from a short corner action.

On the 19th Chircop effected another save on an effort by Mark Camilleri and, at the other end, a typical run on the flank by Stephen Tanti ended with his final pass being missed by his team mates with only the goalkeeper at their mercy.

In the 43minute, Edward Hughes saw his push-shot sail over the bar and on the 48th a good move between Hughes and Cristian Bonello ended with Marvin Vella tapping in from close range to open the score.

Qormi kept their cool after this setback and by the 54th they managed to equalise through Jonathan Aquilina who watched his soft hit at goal deflected into goal by Clifford Defratelli.

In the 57th minute it had to be a point blank save by Chircop to deny Ivan Magro after an excellent move on the right side of the D between Agius Darmanin and Bonello.

Veterans’ festival

Also during this weekend the Hockey Association, Malta organised a festival for Veterans between Celtic Tigers from Ireland, Gens Italica from Italy and a Local Selection. The average age of the teams was in the mid-fifties.

The tournament got underway on Saturday 1 March with three matches which were played in the best of spirits. All three teams played two matches each with a duration of 30 mins each half.

The games were played in the following sequence with the following results:

Malta Vets-Gens Italica 2-0; Celtic Tigers-Malta Vets. 2-2; Gens-Celtic Tigers 1-1.

On Sunday afternoon the teams again faced each other with the following results:

Celtic Tigers-Malta Vets 2-2; Malta Vets-Gens Italica 2-0; Gens Italica-Celtic Tigers 1-2.

Thus the tournament was won by the Malta Vets.

On Sunday evening a presentation dinner was held at the Vivaldi Hotel.
