The Dance Workshop is producing its much awaited annual dance production at its regular venue, St Agatha's Auditorium on 18 and 19 March. Entitled Verve '08, the programme promises to be full of energy and vigour as in the previous years. The performance is once again divided into two sections: an original children's ballet based on the poem L-Gharusa tal-Mosta and in the second half, called A Night at the Opera, senior dancers and students from the studios will have a chance to show off their worth.

The hour-long children's ballet is based on one of our favourite Maltese poems. The studio's principal Theresa Lungaro-Mifsud, has adapted the poem and turned it into a delightful short ballet to music by Stravinsky, Adam, Pugni and Drigo. The exciting plot includes a kidnap by corsairs, a voyage across the Mediterranean sea, a comical Pasha, harem dancers and slaves. The studio's established dancers and guests will lead the children's ballet to make it enjoyable for both the parents and regular theatre goers.

During the second half, reputable local choreographers have been inspired by traditional and modern-day operas. Francesca Abela Tranter's work explores the use of the voice. Theresa Lungaro-Mifsud draws her inspiration for one of her ballets from the forest setting of the chosen opera. Pamela Kerr portrays Manuel de Falla's La Vida Breve with vibrant Spanish dancing while emerging choreographer Rachel Grech plays around with Callas' temperament. Claire Cassola and Jes Sciberras will close the evening with excerpts from the Rock Opera We will Rock You with music and lyrics by Queen.

Costumes, light design, projections and scenery will, as usual, be of the highest standard making this magical evening once again a night not to be missed and to be remembered.
