During the counting of votes held in the Naxxar Counting Hall yesterday afternoon, Azzjoni Nazzjonali’s deputy leader Anglu Xuereb said: “It looks like we don’t stand a chance of electing a candidate. We anticipated that we would have had some transfer votes but this did not happen. However considering that we have only been active for five months, we are still looking ahead.”

On the other hand AN’s leader Dr Josie Muscat refused to comment when contacted by this newspaper yesterday.

Pressed for his views about the election’s outcome yesterday, he refused to comment, yet an official statement was issued later in the evening stating: “The Maltese people had a golden opportunity to choose cooperation instead of division, by getting rid of a political system based on two voices only in Parliament. However the Maltese people chose to keep the system as it is and AN respects this choice. We congratulate the Nationalist Party for another win and wish it every success in the interest of our country.”
