The Malta Amateur Athletic Association held its Annual General Meeting recently.

Edwin Attard, the Secretary General submitted his annual report, which is in fact a very detailed report of the activities, both sportive and managerial, of the association . Maurice Spiteri, the Treasurer also read out his report which showed that the association

had ended the accounting period from 1 July, 2006 to 31December 2007 with a small surplus after deducting depreciation of over Lm6,000. This surplus would not have materialised had the association not registered a profit from the organisation of the E A. Calendar Conference last October.

In his address, the President elected to talk more on the future more then the past where he announced that the association will be holding an IAAF Level One Technical Officials Course which will be conducted by Ms Elena Orlova ( from Russia) and that this course is being held between the 5 and 13 April. He also mentioned that for the Invitation International meeting the association has confirmed the participation of teams from Northern England, Tunisia, Egypt and possibly France. During the first week of April the MAAA will be sending a team of about 16 athletes aged between 13 and 16 to participate in an international competition at Crystal Palace,

London. This does not mean that the association will not be participating in the Brno Competition as it has been doing in previous years. It is hoped that this would be an additional opportunity for the association to motivate a larger number of young athletes.

The President proposed the holding of a seminar so that the association would be able to discuss matters concerning the operation of the Track with Club officials, the newly formed Company, Marketing and, perhaps even more important, the improvement in the level of the sport.

At the end of the meeting the association held elections for the formation of a new Council

The newly elected council will be as follows: -

Tania Xuereb; Antoine Attard; Valerie Farrugia; Mark Farrugia, Valerie

Farrugia; Anthony Fava; Maurice Spiteri; Charles Pullicino and Mario Micallef.

Anthony Chircop, (President ) and Edwin Attard (Secretary General ) were not contested and were therefore re-elected without the need for a ballot.

The statute of the association provides that the maximum number of Council Members should not be formed of more then nine members. However since Charles Pullicino and Mario Micallef both polled the same number of votes, another ballot was taken.

After two further ballots were taken and the candidates kept obtaining the same number of votes it was proposed and agreed that both candidates would have a seat on the council and that this would be ratified at an extraordinary general meeting which would be called for this purpose.
