Juande Ramos needs something special if he is to hang on to the UEFA Cup for an unprecedented third straight season.

While Bayern Munich look to have secured a quarter-final place even before this week's matches, Ramos' Tottenham side needs to recover a 1-0 deficit at PSV Eindhoven today if it is to advance in the competition its coach won with Sevilla the past two seasons.

"We have to treat it as a final because we need to win, it's as simple as that," Ramos' assistant, Gus Poyet, said. "It will be very tactical out there, but for us it's simple. Go out there, score goals, and win the game."

Spurs rebounded from last week's loss at White Hart Lane, when Jefferson Farfan scored in the 34th minute, and warmed up for the return with a 4-0 Premier League win over London rivals West Ham.

Dutch league leaders PSV were idle at the weekend after their match against Ajax was called off because of a strike by police, and coach Sef Vergoossen is trying to make sure his out-of-practice team is on guard against the two-time UEFA Cup champions.

"We aren't there yet," Vergoossen said. "They have a team who can score from a half chance, even in an away game.

England could easily be without a representative in the quarter-finals since Everton host Fiorentina and trail 2-0, while Bolton are at Sporting Lisbon tomorrow on a 1-1 draw.

Bayern could be one of three German teams in the last eight and have the best chance of making it since they host Anderlecht in their second leg already holding a 5-0 lead.

The four-time European champions will be joined by at least one other German side - Hamburger SV host Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen needing to recover from a 1-0 first-leg defeat - but Werder Bremen trail Rangers 2-0 ahead of their home leg tomorrow.

Getafe look set to continue Spain's interest in the tournament, losing only two of their last 14 matches and taking a 2-1 first-leg lead over Benfica ahead of today's return.
