Despite adverse weather, a handsome number of participants took part in the first motor water sports event of the year at Qalet Marku, in Bahar ic-Caghaq.

The event was organised by the Malta Personal Watercraft and the Malta Chaudron Power Boats associations and MM2 Ltd, official distributors of Mercury and Mercruiser engines, under the patronage of the Malta Power Boat Federation and in collaboration with the Malta Maritime Authority.

The closed circuit event consisted of two heats for the Personal Watercraft and two heats for the Cyber 370 series.

The Cyber 370 series Heat was a struggle between different engine brands and drivers. Engines performed well during both events but Mercury stood out as Team Shamal, led by driver Michael Abela, placed first in both events with a Mercury engine.

Winners of all heats were Michael Abela, who placed first with a Mercury engine, Mark Debono second on Yamaha and Daniel Attard third also on Yamaha. Carden Mizzi came and Mario Galdes placed fourth and fifth respectively, both with Mariner.

“Motor water sports has its established place among its enthusiasts and its popularity can only get better,” said the event’s organisers. “We had less than ideal weather for the first event this year, yet the participants’ eager determination led to a spectacular event. We look forward to see new faces and spectators at our next event on March 15.”

The next motor water sports event will be held at Qalet Marku in Bahar ic-Caghaq next Saturday, at 12 noon.
