The Union Haddiema Maghqudin thanked the five Maltese Members of the European Parliament for the services they offer to the country.

In a statement to mark the 50th anniversary of the European Parliament, to be celebrated on 19 March, the UHM said that five Maltese MEPs have to carry out that which other countries can do with more representatives.

A stronger European Parliament will serve to give the Maltese more rights. Malta's particular needs will be given more importance if Maltese MEPs have a stronger voice and there is better communication between them and the people.

The UHM said that through the Lisbon Treaty, the EP's consent is required for any important decision that is taken and this will address the democratic deficit the European Union is often accused of.

This means that there is much to celebrate on 19 March, the UHM said.
