On the initiative of Siggiewi local council, the huge Laferla Cross and the adjacent chapel of the Annunciation on the high plateau, known as Ta’ l-Gholja, will be be floodlit again during the nights of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. The steep track leading to the hill will also be floodlit so the hillside will be transformed into an appropriate Way of the Cross.

The cross was erected by Dun Pawl Laferla from Siggiewi in 1903 to mark the beginning of the 20th century. A set of stone statues representing the Passion of Our Lord was also installed along the steep track.

The original cross was destroyed during a storm in 1937. It was replaced in August 1963, and renovated in 1984.

Siggiewi local council started floodlighting the Cross on Maundy Thursday night in 1994. Thousands of people visit Ta’ l-Gholja every year to pray and follow the Way of the Cross.
