The Malta Labour Party administration is expected to meet today, to discuss the casual elections, by means of which candidates elected in two districts relinquish one of them, to make way for others that would have not immediately made it to Parliament.

The administration includes deputy Labour leaders Charles Mangion and Michael Falzon, MLP president Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi and secretary general Jason Micallef, among others.

There are six seats that need to be filled since former Labour leader Alfred Sant, the two deputy Labour leaders, as well as MPs Helena Dalli, George Vella and Evarist Bartolo were all elected in two districts.

So far, it is probable that Dr Mangion will relinquish the sixth district. Other districts where casual elections will be held will be the first, second, third and tenth districts.

Labour candidate Gavin Gulia, who failed to be elected in both the sixth and seventh districts, has already said he will not contest the casual election. Rather, he expressed his wish to contest the post of MLP deputy leader.

This implies that there will also be a race for the two posts of deputy leaders. Elections for new deputy leaders would have to be held separately from the election for the new Labour leader.
